Nancy Guthrie’s family members, including her adult children and their spouses, are not suspects in the 84-year-old’s disappearance, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Monday, adding in a statement that to “suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel.”
“The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case,” Nanos said in the statement posted on X.
The sheriff’s department also asked members of the media to “honor” their profession and report with compassion and professionalism.
The announcement is notable as it comes after some true crime enthusiasts and online sleuths have suggested, without evidence, a family connection to the disappearance.
While it is standard practice for investigators to examine the possible connection of relatives to violent crimes, no evidence has surfaced to date suggesting any wrongdoing by members of the Guthrie family.
