Three siblings in ice pound

28 de enero de 2026

United States — Three siblings, ages six, eight, and nine, lost their lives after falling into a partially ice-covered pond near their home.

The incident occurred on January 25 during a winter storm that affected more than 40 states, bringing sub-zero temperatures and severe weather conditions to several regions across the country.

The children’s mother told a local outlet that the youngsters were playing near a private pond close to their residence when the tragic situation unfolded.

According to her account, the six-year-old child slipped and fell into the cold water, prompting his siblings to react immediately in an attempt to help him amid the danger posed by the ice.

The other two children tried to rescue him but also became trapped in the pond, which had a partial layer of ice that prevented them from getting out on their own.

The mother said she witnessed everything and tried to intervene immediately, but environmental conditions and the frozen surface made it difficult for her to act near the icy pond.

A coach from a nearby school noticed what was happening and rushed to assist, managing to bring the mother to safety, though it was not possible to reach the three children during the emergency.

Response teams were able to recover two of the children at the scene, while the third was located hours later during specialized rescue and search operations.

Authorities said the full identities of the family have not yet been released and that investigations are ongoing to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident.

The tragedy caused deep shock among residents, who activated a chain of community support to accompany the family and provide assistance during their recent period of mourning.

Neighbors and acquaintances described the children as close-knit, cheerful, and very bonded, noting that they enjoyed playing outdoors even in winter, as long as weather conditions allowed it safely.

The extremely low temperatures recorded that day played a decisive role, with water temperatures near zero degrees Celsius, complicating rescue efforts and increasing the risks associated with icy conditions.

The storm that impacted the region caused power outages, school closures, and multiple emergency situations, becoming one of the most intense cold waves at the beginning of the year.

In response, emergency agencies issued a call to strengthen preventive measures, increase supervision of children, and avoid access to unsupervised bodies of water.
