A fourth United States service member has died following injuries sustained during the opening phase of Operation Epic Fury, the large-scale U.S. military campaign targeting Iranian military infrastructure, according to an updated statement released early Monday by U.S. Central Command.
Central Command confirmed that the service member, who had been listed in serious condition after Iran’s initial retaliatory strikes, succumbed to injuries despite intensive medical treatment.
The identities of all four fallen troops are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The latest fatality brings the total number of U.S. service members killed in action during the unfolding conflict to four.
Several others remain hospitalized with serious injuries, while additional personnel have been treated for minor wounds and returned to duty.
Operation Epic Fury began with coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iranian command centers, missile sites, naval assets and facilities linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
President Donald Trump described the operation as a “necessary action to neutralize immediate threats” during remarks delivered from the White House over the weekend.
U.S. Central Command stated that the casualties occurred during Iran’s initial counterattacks targeting regional U.S. military positions.
Two U.S. officials previously confirmed that earlier fatalities were linked to strikes affecting installations in Kuwait, though operational details remain limited due to ongoing security considerations.
Defense Secretary officials reiterated that force protection measures have been reinforced across all U.S. installations in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, National Security Council spokesperson statements emphasized that “the mission remains ongoing” and that additional assessments are underway.
In a public message, President Donald Trump expressed condolences to the families of the fallen troops, calling their deaths “a great loss for our country” and praising their service and sacrifice.
Members of Congress from both parties also issued statements honoring the service members and urging continued support for military families.
The Department of Defense indicated that formal casualty notifications are being completed before releasing further identifying information.
Military protocol requires at least 24 hours after family notification before public disclosure of names.
As combat operations continue, Pentagon officials say the situation remains fluid.
Intelligence and defense agencies are closely monitoring further Iranian responses, while diplomatic channels in the region remain tense.
The deaths mark the most significant single-operation U.S. military loss since the start of the current confrontation, underscoring the escalating stakes of the conflict and the human cost of the expanding regional crisis.
