A Haitian asylum seeker has died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after being detained for several months at a federal immigration detention facility in Arizona, according to officials and reports from local authorities.

The man was identified as Emmanuel Damas, a 56-year-old Haitian national who had been held at the Florence Correctional Center in Florence, Arizona. Damas had reportedly been in ICE custody for approximately four months while his immigration case was being processed.

According to preliminary information shared by local officials, Emmanuel Damas began experiencing severe dental pain while detained. Reports indicate that the condition worsened over time and eventually developed into a serious infection.

Family members and local sources later stated that the infection may have spread after the dental issue was not treated promptly. The situation reportedly deteriorated until Damas required emergency medical attention.

He was eventually transported from the Florence Correctional Center to HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he was admitted for intensive medical care. Despite medical efforts by hospital staff, Emmanuel Damas died on March 2, 2026.

Following his death, the case drew attention from local officials. Christine Ellis, a city council member in Chandler, Arizona, publicly questioned whether adequate medical care had been provided while Damas was detained, noting concerns about delays in treatment for the reported infection.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office is responsible for determining the official cause of death. At the time of reporting, the final medical determination had not yet been publicly released.

According to immigration monitoring groups and federal data, Emmanuel Damas is at least the tenth detainee to die while in ICE custody during 2026, prompting renewed discussion among advocacy organizations, lawmakers, and local officials about medical services inside immigration detention centers.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have stated that the death will undergo an internal review as part of standard procedures when a detainee dies while in federal custody.

As investigations continue, the case of Emmanuel Damas has added to broader national conversations in the United States regarding detention conditions, medical access for asylum seekers, and oversight of immigration facilities.

In the days following the news of his death, tributes began to appear online as people reacted to the story of Emmanuel Damas. Among them, a digital artist known online as Gámen created a commemorative artwork dedicated to Damas.

The portrait, shared across social media platforms, depicts the Haitian man surrounded by symbolic elements representing hope, migration, and remembrance.

According to followers of the artist, Gámen said the piece was created to honor the memory of Emmanuel Damas and to remind people of the human stories behind immigration statistics.

The artwork quickly circulated online, with many users sharing the image as a tribute while discussions about detention conditions and migrant rights continued across digital platforms.
