Billings, Montana.— More than 1,000 people gathered at Veterans Park on Thursday evening, August 27, 2026, for an emotional candlelight vigil honoring eight members of the same family who lost their l1v3s in the devastating sh00t1ng and house fire that occurred four days earlier in the Billings area.
The victims represented four generations of one family, ranging in age from 7 to 92. They were identified as:
Evelyn Smith, 92
Dana Smith, 73
Barbara “Barb” Smith, 72
Megan Ireland-Ghekiere, 39
Landon Ghekiere, 15
Charlotte Ghekiere, 12
Owen Ireland, 13
Chloe Ireland, 7
Residents filled Veterans Park carrying candles, flowers and messages of support. Large photographs of each of the eight family members were displayed near the stage as relatives, friends, teachers, law-enforcement officers and community members gathered to remember the people behind the names.
Different colored balloons were also used to represent each member of the family.
The vigil focused primarily on their personalities, relationships and the memories they left behind rather than the violent circumstances surrounding their d34ths.
Pastor Dave Thompson, of First Presbyterian Church, reminded those attending that the gathering was intended to celebrate the lives that had been lived.
Neighbor and vigil organizer Jennifer Mercer remembered the children as bright and loving members of the community and said the response from Billings had provided enormous support to the surviving relatives.
Radio personality and organizer Justin Hutchinson, known as “McLovin,” also addressed the crowd, emphasizing that people did not need to personally know the family to recognize the importance of their lives.
Billings Mayor Mike Nelson spoke during the memorial and described the tragedy as something that had shaken the community’s sense of security while highlighting the extraordinary response from residents.
One of the most emotional moments came when Erica Jarussi Schneider, the mother of Landon and Charlotte Ghekiere, remembered her two children.
She said investigators had learned that Charlotte made the 911 call seeking help for her family, while Landon apparently tried to protect his sister during the final moments of the incident.
Their surviving relatives were among those watching as candles were illuminated across Veterans Park.
Authorities say the tr4g3dy unfolded on Sunday, August 23, at a residence on White Star Circle in the western Billings area, where family members had gathered for Sunday dinner.
The Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office, led in the investigation by Interim Sheriff Kent O’Donnell, identified Alan Michael Smith, 44, as the person believed responsible for the 4tt4ck.
Smith was related to all eight victims. He was the son of Dana and Barbara Smith, grandson of Evelyn Smith and brother of Megan Ireland-Ghekiere.
Authorities say multiple fires were deliberately started inside the residence. When deputies and firefighters reached the property, smoke and flames were already coming from the home, and reports of active gunfire initially prevented firefighters from safely entering.
Investigators said Alan Michael Smith later d13d from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after law enforcement arrived.
Authorities continue examining the heavily damaged property for physical evidence. Because there were no surviving witnesses inside the residence, investigators have acknowledged that some questions surrounding exactly what happened and why may remain difficult to answer.
The surviving family includes Adam Ghekiere, Megan’s husband and father of Landon and Charlotte, as well as Brad Ireland, the father of Owen and Chloe.
Public support has extended far beyond Thursday’s vigil. Fundraising campaigns created to assist surviving relatives with funeral and other expenses have collectively raised more than $200,000.
Flowers, photographs and personal messages have also continued accumulating at a memorial created for the family.
The August 27 vigil ultimately transformed Veterans Park into a place of remembrance for Evelyn Smith, Dana Smith, Barbara Smith, Megan Ireland-Ghekiere, Landon Ghekiere, Charlotte Ghekiere, Owen Ireland and Chloe Ireland.
Eight names. Four generations. One family remembered by an entire community.
As candles illuminated the park Thursday night, Billings delivered a message surviving relatives said they desperately needed after an unimaginable loss: their loved ones will not simply become statistics. Their names, personalities and memories will continue to matter.
